How To Make Indoor Air As Safe As Possible—For Home Or Business

For home or office use, now or during fire season, get peace of mind that you are breathing the cleanest air possible.

SFNM has been using Austin Air HEPA filters for over 20 years. We are also a distributor for these units and believe they are some of the best filters available. Recently it came to my attention that these HEPA filters are effective in filtering viruses in addition to dust, mold, pollens, and other pollutants. Our lives have been affected by the closure of non-essential businesses, restaurants and retail stores because of the concern of aerosol transmission of the virus indoors, and more and more information is coming out about indoor air quality with regard to COVID-19 transmission. Office buildings are reconsidering their HVAC systems in order to bring in outside and and exhaust air from the building.

Start with breakfast. Every morning, I start my day by fueling my body with nutrients it needs to stay healthy. (That’s called breakfast!) My favorites are an egg over easy on whole-grain toast with sliced tomato and Greek yogurt with berries. It helps me stay focused in the morning on getting my kids to school and start my workday off on the right foot.

Although many small businesses do not have HVAC systems, they can improve the indoor air quality with the use of HEPA filters. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace, and CDC guidelines suggest HEPA filters can be a part of a businesses overall health and safety plan.

Transmission Of Coronavirus Is Airborne

Emerging evidence suggests the main method of transmission of COVID-19 is airborne. When we come into contact with an infected person, they release the virus into the environment. The number of viral particles a person comes into contact with may determine how sick they could become.

For example, we know that a single cough can release 3,000 droplets, and droplets travel 50 miles per hour. Most droplets are large and fall quickly, while some are in aerosol form and stay in the air longer. A sneeze releases about 3,000 droplets at a speed of up to 200 mph and can easily travel across a room. If a person is infected, the droplets in a single sneeze or cough may contain as many as 200 million virus particles which can be dispersed in the environment around them. People who are infected without symptoms also shed viruses but in smaller amounts than symptomatic people.

Successful Infection = Exposure to Virus x Time

This formula is the basis of contact tracing. The more time we spend in an infectious environment (an office with an infected symptomatic person), the easier it is to become infected. Being exposed to a high viral load can overwhelm our immune system and increase our chances of severe illness. Air filtration or air exchange reduces our risk of successful infection by reducing viral exposure.

How Can Austin Air Purifiers Protect Against Airborne Viruses?

Medical grade HEPA technology used in Austin Air filters is proven to remove 95% of all pollutants as small as 0.1 microns. The average size of the COVID-19 virus is 0.125 microns, so we are confident these air purifiers are effectively removing the vast majority of the virus when it is airborne. Further, the virus is normally attached to a droplet which ranges between 5 and 10 microns, making it easier to catch and filter.

Reducing The Viral Load

Using an Austin Air Purifier reduces the amount of airborne virus a person may be exposed to. This helps to lessen risk in two ways. In the first instance, it may prevent you from contracting the virus altogether. And if you do become infected, it could lower the viral load in the surrounding environment. Reducing the viral load in this way gives the immune system a better chance of fighting the virus and therefore may reduce the risk of serious symptoms.

Which Unit Should I Buy?

Have a solid breakfast with plenty of protein and fat. Eat meals and snacks at regular times every day.

The HEPA technology used in these models effectively removes 95% of airborne viruses and bacteria that are 0.1 microns and larger, as well as everyday pollutants such as dust, dander and allergens, making the standard HealthMate filter an excellent choice. The carbon-zeolite blend in the HealthMate+ is unrivaled in its ability to remove chemicals and VOC’s. And for ultimate protection, the Austin Air Bedroom Machine includes both HEPA and HEGA technology.

This use of a HEPA air filter is not considered the first line of defense against COVID-19, and you should not rely on a HEPA filter to keep you safe. CDC guidelines say the best way to prevent coronavirus infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus which is spread mainly from person to person. Wash your hands often, avoid close contact, and wear a mask.
