The researchers studied 1,120 women, ages 45-56, from the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation, a 17-year-long prospective cohort study. Of those participants, 578 experienced natural menopause.
Based on the level of PFAS in their blood, the women were classified in four categories: low, low-medium, medium-high and high.
Women in the high group experienced natural menopause a median of two years earlier compared to the women in the low group."Even menopause a few years earlier than usual could have a significant impact on cardiovascular and bone health, quality of life, and overall health in general among women," said corresponding author Sung Kyun Park, who has a doctorate of science and a master's of public health, and is an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
